What is Shifting Left with DevSecOps?
In short, DevSecOps means development, security, and operations. Where automation and integration of security takes place at every phase of the software development lifecycle, from initial design through integration, testing, deployment, and software delivery.
DevSecOps requires a change in culture, process, and tools across these core functional teams and makes security a shared responsibility. Everyone involved in the SDLC has a role to play in building security into the DevOps continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflow.
The term “shift left” refers to the efforts of a DevOps team to guarantee application security at the earliest stages in the development lifecycle, as part of an organizational pattern known as DevSecOps (collaboration between development, security, and operations).
To shift left means to move a process to the left on the traditional linear depiction of the software development lifecycle (SDLC). There are two common subjects of shift left initiatives in DevOps: security and testing.
